Year 10 IDU Genetics: The Task

IDU covering eugenics, gene manipulation and bioethics.

When are we doing this?

This is a fast paced unit running over the following periods" Friday 30th October (p2&3) and Friday 6th November (p3&4). Studnets are expected to show that they are independent learners and to seek out understanding inbetween the sessions.

Inquiry Questions

  • Can a person achieve their goals through hard work and determination, not only genetic manipulation?
  • Is the fabric of society at risk if we resort to genetic manipulation in order to make the “perfect” human being?

Design Brief

In your group of 4-5 students (based on English classes), you need to decide whether you believe that genetic manipulation as shown in GATTACA is beneficial to society. Base your contention on ONE of the following:

  • Genetic manipulation to support the valid and in-valid class system
  • Advocacy for non-genetic manipulation

As a group, you need to design and present an advertising pitch that addresses at least one of the following concerns that have been raised from market research:

  • A person can achieve their goals through hard work and determination, not only genetic manipulation
  • the fabric of society at risk if we resort to genetic manipulation in order to make the “perfect” human being
  • hypothesis: there is no gene for fate

Design Specifications

  • All students in the team need to contribute to the pitch that will be presented in period 4 on the 6th November 2015
  • Draw upon the information presented on genetics and eugenics (Mrs Sanders), ethics (Ms McLean), the Libguide, GATTACA, and any other reliable sources.
  • Your group must have an appropriate company name and mission statement
  • The finished presentation can take any appropriate form, i.e. oral presentation with a PowerPoint, or film
  • Each presentation must be 3-5 minutes
  • The best pitch from each English class will then be presented to the year level in the Pastoral Period (12th November) for the “Final Pitch Off Battle”
