A small amount of ionising radiation is passed through the body. In the past, this went onto a sheet of special film. Nowadays x-ray examinations are more likely to use a device that will capture transmitted x-rays to create an electronic image.

One of the earliest applications of X rays was in medicine, where they were used for both diagnosis and therapy. Today X rays are still most widely used in this field. They penetrate soft tissues but are stopped by bones, which absorb them.
X-rays are generated via interactions of the accelerated electrons with electrons of tungsten nuclei within the tube anode. There are two types of X-ray generated: characteristic radiation and bremsstrahlung radiation.
